Fear

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom. Proverbs 9:10

We're uncomforatable with the idea of fearing God arent we? We defend Him as One whose love is so great He needs not be feared. As 1John 4:18 says:"Perfect love drives out fear." So we redefine fear as "awe" and "reverence." Yet the scriptures use the term "fear of God" frequently enough to give us the impression that something more than awe is appropriate. It is the kind of fear that terrified the disciples when they heard God's voice aat the Transfiguration(Mathew 17:6); that overwhelmed Isaiah when he cried out; "woe to me! I am ruined!"(Isaiah 6:5); and that drove John facedown at the sight of the glorified Son (Revelation 1:17).

Why does a God of love tell us that widsom begins when we fear Him? Because when we approach the Holy One with a casual familiarity we are not living in reality. We do not take Him as seriously as we ought. Fear - not of punishmentment but of the overwhelming greatness of God sees Him correctly. When we stand at the edge of the vast, bottomless chasm that separates us from Him, and we behold the immeasurable expense He paid to bridge that chasm, we experience fear. Fear of what would have been if we had never known the gosple. Fear of our own unworthiness. Fear of the absolute dedication to Him that is now required of us. When this fear grips us, we begin to understand the enormity of the gosple and of our God. That understanding begns to rearrange our lives. It shakes our souls, gives us grey hair and reminds us what a great God we serve!

I think that it is important for us to know God's love and rest comforatably in it. But a true understanding of God's love begins with an overwhelming awarenes of His greatness, holiness, and power as they contrast our own sinful nature. There is nothing more fear inducing than that.

I know that it has been a while since I has made a post on the old blog. It's not that I don't care about all of you it's just that I have been so busy with life. So here is what is going on in our world right now. We are expecting our second child Gavin Nicholas Odom. We are so excited about having anouther child. We are so blessed to have such an incredible son already and we cant wait to have another blessing. We are still trying to sell our house. Please keep praying for us. We have a potential buyer right now. We are just waiting to here back from there lender. Pray Pray Pray! We had a great day yesterday hanging out with family and making silly videos! Here is one of the video's that we made.

The Swing

This weekend was a great weekend for the Odom family. We took our annual trip up to New York. Amanda has an amazing family there, and we look forward to our time with them every year. This year was especially special because Noah was really able to get around and have some fun. One of his favorite spots at the cottage was the swing. He loved the swing! He enjoyed making a huge mess by getting ice cream all over his face, and he ate so much watermelon that he actually got sick. The boy had some fun on that swing. If he saw Amanda and I on it, he would come over to us with his cute little voice and say "up...up". We would gladly pick him up and let him swing with us. He would swing for a couple of minutes and then he would start to squirm. The funny thing was that when he wanted to get down he would say "up". We would try to teach him what "up" means and that "down" is what you say to get off of the swing. His response was the same every time, "up". Isn't it funny how we can repeat something so many times but he never seemed to get it? It could be a bit frustrating when I just finish explaining something and he immediately says the opposite of what I said. Well if we're honest, we are the exact same way with the Lord. He can be telling us something or showing us something out of His word and we do the exact opposite of what he is trying to teach us. I can personally tell you that I am guilty of that.

Heavy Truth

Acts 20:24 says this.."I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may accomplish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God"

Today has been a cool day for me. I have been thinking a lot about my life and the steps and choices that I have made in my journey. I question God for allowing certain things happen to me and people around me. I am a young guy but I have experienced a whole lot of life. From the greatest joys of marriage and having our first child to the opposite extreme of grieving the death of family and friends. My life has been filled with a lot of "stuff". Sometimes the "stuff" that has filled my life has caused me to loose direction along the way. I'm guilty. I think we all are. Paul say's " I do not account my life of any value''. Only one thing mattered to him. Finish my course, and run my race. This is a huge conviction for me. I want that. I want my concern to be the souls of people no matter what. Whether I am on stage leading worship or at a restaurant, I want the conviction that Paul had to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

My prayer today is this:

May it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. (Galatians 6:14)

Pretty Awesome

First let me say this...I love staff meetings at my church. The issues that we deal with are so incredible! Let me explain. Today, we had to talk through how we are going to handle the baptism service this week. The issue that we are having has to do with the amount of people getting baptized. We are trying to figure out how to make the service stay under a hour and fifteen minutes. It's nuts! How amazing is it that we are having to think about that? God is doing so many great things at Foothills. I just wonder what is going to happen next! I hope we are ready!

I'm Back

I recognize that I have been away from the blogging world for a couple of weeks but I'm back baby! The reason for the lack of blogging is the fact that I am super busy! I just finished camp season and I am now making the transition to our new church home. My life has been pretty hectic. Even though life is crazy, I have never been more excited about what God is doing. I will be able to give you more details about that tomorrow so come back by and catch up.

Band Band Band

Band, band, band! I have the greatest band on the planet. I have never been so blessed to have such great people lead worship with me. These guys are radically in love with the Lord and they are super talented musicians! What more could I ask for? Kyle Deloach is the lead guitarist and the boy can flat out bring the rain. He knows what to play, when to play and how to make it awesome! Michael Harrison is the bass player and the boy can do just that. He makes the bass feel like a dream. He just knows exactly how to lock in with the drums! Tim Wadsworth has been playing drums. He does a great job and he has one of the craziest personalities I have ever known. I love you Tim! Zach Harrison has been playing rhythm electric and singing. I will just say this about him...If there was a perfect all around person it would be him. He has got so much going for him in so many ways it's not funny. Adam Courtney has been playing acoustic and singing. Adam is a very gifted singer and song writer. I can pretty much guarantee that you will here more about him in your life. He has the gift and knows how to use it. Also Bethany Fisher has just started singing with us and she does a great job as well. So, that's my band and I am so happy to have them with me this summer. I love them all more than they will ever know and I can't wait to see what God does through them in the years to come.

Birthday Boy

"Happy Birthday To You!" What a great line! It says so much while telling so little. It doesn't give away your age or gender. It can be sung to anyone or anything having a birthday. It's beautiful! Does it ever get old though? Yesterday was my 27th birthday. I know what you're thinking...Dave couldn't be over 21-well, it's true! For my birthday I spent most of the day with campers and camp staff. It was a lot of fun, but the birthday song got a little old. I think that I heard that song 40 or more times. It was nuts! Yesterday was a great day. I turned 27 for the first time.

Best Day Ever

Three years ago today could have possibly been the best day ever! My Wedding Day!!!! My wife was the most beautiful bride in the whole world. I can remember watching her walk down the aisle. Every bone in my body melted and my eyes started raining with joy. I felt like the luckiest guy in the world. I still do. My wife is the most amazing woman I have ever meet. She is without question my soulmate and she truly does complete me!

Better Days

Have you ever wondered why some days are better than others? I am sure you know what I mean. One day you will be happy go lucky, and then you have days where you are bothered by everything. What do you think causes this in us? I think a bunch of things contribute to how we react to different situations at different times. Our reactions are based on two fundamental truths. Are we living in our flesh or the Spirit? John 3:6 says this, "Flesh gives birth to flesh but Spirit gives birth to spirit."
So now, the question is, are we living in our flesh or are we living in our spirit? For most of us it is much easier to live in the flesh because we are so used to living that way. Before salvation that is all that we had. That is all that we knew. For those who have been changed by the power of Christ we have the Spirit of God in us.

Wow, that's a lot to think about!

The Unmistakable Joy of Tubing

Thursday I was able to go to the lake with a few of my band mates and one of the pastors from the church. There we were able to partake in the unmistakable joy of tubing. What makes this so much fun, you ask? Well, for me the fun came from watching my friends tube. Tim and Kyle were completely abused by the tube. I received so much joy from watching them fly through the air and pound the water. I don't think that there was a moment that I did not have a huge smile on my face. Well, until it was my turn. I knew as I was swimming to the tube, it was my turn to be laughed at, and for the very same reason I had been laughing at them. So yes, I was absolutely defeated by the tube. In fact my body can feel how bad I was pounded by the lake today. None the less I had an incredible time at the lake!

Uncontainable Excitment

Have you ever been so excited about something about that you can't sleep? You know, the kind of excitement that you had as a child the night before Christmas. All you could think about was waking up and opening presents. You would lay in bed thinking about that gift. For some of us it might have been a certain kind of GI-Joe or a new Barbie Car. I don't know what you wanted but I know the feeling that you might have had. Well, I feel like it is Christmas everyday for me right now. I have recently become a part of the Foothills Community Church Team. The staff rocks, the new building is unstinkin' believable, and the community is just right! I am so excited right now, I can barely contain myself. It only gets better and better! I get to be apart of this team hopefully forever. There is no better place than where I am. I can't wait to see what God is going to do through this church!

So,

I have never been a writer much less a blogger before. In fact, I have a pretty hard time with some simple things that many of you take for granted. I would be classified as WSOTP(worst speller on the planet). The good thing about blogging is that I have a computer that checks my spelling as I type. So I am protected by the grace of my computer. Anyway, with this blog I hope to share unedited idea's/ thoughts with you about what is going on in my world. Some of these idea's may be pretty blunt, a little convicting and might even make you cry... That might be pushing it, but I really hope this blog does what a blog is supposed to do. So, saying that I look forward to letting you all into my life! The good, the bad, the ugly and all the other stuff.
